Black History Month at Oxford Sixth Form College

SCP
Both students and staff have actively participated in a diverse range of activities within our environment of cultural enrichment and awareness.
At Oxford Sixth Form College, we wholeheartedly embrace the spirit of Black History Month, recognising its significance in promoting inclusivity and understanding within our community.

Black History Month stands as an essential period for not only celebrating the invaluable contributions of black individuals to our society throughout history but also for fostering awareness of the persistent challenges faced by many. This annual observance provides a dedicated space for reflection, education, and advocacy, amplifying the voices and stories that have often been marginalised.

As part of our commitment to a comprehensive and enlightening educational experience, students enrolled in our Super-Curricular Lesson Programme engaged in an exploration of the 'Rhodes Must Fall' Movement. The discussions centred around understanding how the legacies of colonial beneficiaries, notably Cecil Rhodes, persist in influencing various aspects of contemporary society. This deep dive into historical narratives not only broadened perspectives but also stimulated critical thinking about the enduring impacts of colonialism on our present reality.

In addition to academic pursuits, our vibrant community came together in a celebration of cultural diversity through a hair braiding event hosted by Gifty, one of our lovely houseparents. The positive reception and genuine enjoyment reflected the success of the initiative, illustrating the power of such events in fostering unity and appreciation for diverse traditions.

These activities are integral components of our ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and culturally aware environment. By actively participating in discussions, events, and initiatives during Black History Month, we aim to contribute to the broader discussion surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion. As the month unfolds, we look forward to more engaging activities that celebrate diversity and promote understanding among our students and staff, fostering a community that values and appreciates the richness of every individual's background and experiences.
