This academic year the College introduced the Pride Allies team to support LGBT+ students in our community. To help us develop as an LGBT inclusive college and show our commitment to equality and diversity, we applied for College Champion membership at Stonewall, a charitable organisation in the UK whose mission is to raise awareness about LGBT matters: empowering LGBT people and allies to make positive changes in society, transforming institutions to create inclusive and accepting cultures, tackling prejudice or discrimination, as well as changing and protecting laws.

In schools and colleges, LGBT inclusivity and awareness matters as:

  • 45% of lesbian, gay, bi, and trans young people have experienced homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying

  • One in three trans pupils are not able to be known by their preferred name at school

  • 64% of trans pupils are bullied at school for being trans

As a Stonewall College Champion, Oxford Sixth Form College has access to a variety of resources (anti-bullying, awareness and visibility, curriculum ideas, and facts and figures) for staff and students, training courses, and bespoke support with policy and curriculum development to ensure our college setting is following best practice in LGBT inclusion.
