Academic Preparation Programme
Our Academic Preparation Programme is a comprehensive English programme designed to improve the English level of students and enable them to make progress to GCSE, A-Level or BTEC Business programmes.
What is the Academic Preparation Programme (APP)?
The Oxford Sixth Form College Academic Preparation Programme (APP) has been designed to give international students the support they need to ensure they progress to their studies of choice. Benefits of the programme include:
- Guaranteed progression onto GCSE, BTEC, A-Levels and International Foundation Year.
- Great flexibility – start any Monday of the academic year
- Excellent academic and English language preparation for progression onto courses at Oxford Sixth Form College or other independent UK schools.
- Students should expect to see an increase of 0.5 IELTS points per term
We have devised a detailed, rewarding and interesting programme to prepare students for their chosen course of study. As well as teaching Academic English the timetable includes lessons such as:
Reflective learning – these sessions allow students to overview the vocabulary and skills learned on a particular day
Taster courses – these are taught by GCSE, A-Level and BTEC Business teachers and provide students with an introduction to these subjects
Excursion day to museums and other sites
Activities alongside the College’s GCSE students
How does APP help you to achieve at Oxford Sixth Form College?
The core purpose of the Academic Preparation Programme is to improve students’ English grammar and develop their vocabulary and skills for listening, reading, writing and speaking; develop academic reading and writing skills and do so in a learning environment that is supportive, interesting and enjoyable.
The course includes Study Skills such as note-taking, note-making, studying techniques, and much more.
How is it assessed?
APP is based on continuous assessment and students are assessed on a weekly basis. These assessments consist of quizzes, group work, tests, mocks, presentations and projects. At the end of the course students sit an IELTS (Academic) test to demonstrate their readiness to progress to GCSE, BTEC Business or A-Levels.
What do I need?
To join the one year Academic Preparation Programme that starts each September, you will need IELTS 4.0 with 4.0 in each assessed area; reading, writing, listening and speaking.
To join the one term, September start, Academic Preparation Programme you will need a minimum of IELTS 4.5 with 4.5 in each assessed area; reading, writing, listening and speaking. This one term programme can, if you achieve IELTS 5.5 at the end of the course, lead you on to a January start, five-term A-Level or BTEC Business programme.
To join the two terms, January start, Academic Preparation Programme you will need a minimum of IELTS 4.5 with 4.5 in each assessed area; reading, writing, listening and speaking. This two-term programme can, if you achieve IELTS 5.5 at the end of the course, lead you on to a September start, one year GCSE, two-year A-Level or one or two-year BTEC Business programme.
To join the one term, April start, programme you will need a minimum of IELTS 5.0 with a minimum of 5.0 in the assessed areas of reading and writing. This one term programme can, if you achieve IELTS 5.5 at the end of the course, lead you on to a September start, one year GCSE, two-year A-Level or one or two-year BTEC Business programme.
APP will give you the opportunity to improve your English skills, develop study skills and make progress to GCSE, BTEC Business or A-Levels in order to gain access to University. APP will engage you in the study of English that will always be an important skill that will benefit you beyond University.
How old do I need to be to join APP?
In order to enrol on this programme, you will need to have turned 15 before the start of the current academic year. For example, if your 15th birthday is in March, you would need to wait until the start of the next academic year to join this programme.
How long can I spend in APP?
From one term to one year. It depends on your level of English before you start the programme.
When can I make progress to other programmes?
Once you achieve an overall IELTS score of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in reading and writing, you can progress to A-Levels or BTEC Business.
