Applying to University

We aim to give students their best chance of admission to a degree course that matches their aptitudes, interests and academic potential. As part of our support, senior staff and a student’s Senior Tutor provide advice and guidance on destinations after school, how to apply to university, and suitable alternatives.

Beginning the application process

During the spring term of their first year, our Lower VI A-Level and BTEC students are introduced to the UCAS application procedure. For students studying with us for a one year A-Level or BTEC programme, this introduction takes place during their first four weeks at the College. Before they apply to university, all students are directed towards useful sources of information including university prospectuses, degree course guides and careers literature. Extensive use is made of UCAS databases, which save students time in selecting suitable courses.

Applications are normally made after discussions with the student’s Senior Tutor. Students are carefully advised to ensure that they are aware of the course content and likely entrance requirements, so they can make realistic and sensible applications.

Help is then provided to ensure that the UCAS application forms (and any other necessary forms) are completed correctly. We also give guidance on writing the Personal Statement so that the student maximises their chance of obtaining offers. The College also provides an academic reference drawing upon the reference provided by a student’s previous school, giving an objective, supportive assessment of the student’s suitability for the courses applied for.

Responding to interviews and offers

Once university applications have been submitted, their progress is kept under review, and advice is given on how to respond to offers from individual universities. If students are called to interview, we give guidance on how this should be approached, and ‘mock’ interviews are arranged to encourage confidence, poise and effective self-presentation.

Preparation workshops are provided for additional assessment tests such as BMAT and LNAT.

One of our main aims is to ensure that our students gain suitable university places, and our help does not necessarily cease once the student has left the College. We are happy to help students who need further advice once results have been released; direct contact with Admissions Tutors can often help to secure a university place.
