What is BTEC Level 2 Business Studies?

This course covers how businesses operate and why some are successful. Students learn about the main elements of marketing including the marketing mix. The Human Resources module covers recruitment and selection, and students carry out mock interviews. Other units include looking at a business’ key financial accounts.


If you enjoy learning about the operation of businesses and how to set up your own business, then you will enjoy this course.

What will I study?

The units are practical and based on real UK businesses with one unit dedicated to setting up your own small business. You will learn how to examine and analyse the key areas of business, including marketing, finance, recruitment and customer service.

What will I gain from studying the subject?

On completion of the course students can progress to two-year A-Levels or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or the College’s one year BTEC+ programme.

How is it assessed?

Two-thirds of the qualification is assessed by coursework.  This could include presentations, customer service role plays, job interviews and independent research. The core units include starting a small business (of the student’s choice) and finance (which is assessed by an online multiple choice test).  Other units include promotion, customer service, financial accounting and marketing.  Only the marketing unit is assessed by a written exam, with the opportunity to retake.

What do I need?

This course is offered as part of the College’s GCSE programme and so students must meet the entry requirements for the GCSE programme.


Q: What is BTEC?

A: It is an internationally recognised qualification from the Edexcel exam board and is the equivalent of 1 GCSE.


Q: Can I use a laptop for the coursework ?

A: Yes, all coursework is completed on a computer and students are encouraged to bring in their own laptop.
